Getting an estimate is easy! Fill out our form on the Contact-Us page or call/text/email Top Rock Painting. We will schedule a time to come view and discuss your project with you. Then we will crunch some numbers and send you a bid. Bids within Helena city limits are free of charge.
Good question! Many times, contractors that are not licensed and insured will be cheaper (like hiring your nephew!). However, just like hiring your nephew can bring sloppiness and uncertainty, hiring a contractor that hasn’t gotten legally approved to work here (licensed) and hasn’t got someone supporting them through liabilities (insurance) also puts you and your project at risk.
First, quality products look WAY more fantastic. It is like the frosting on a wedding cake. It changes the whole feeling of a room from ‘room’ to … something fancy like ‘palace’.
Second, quality products apply better. This makes the painters job easier. They are less likely to need another coat, or need to do touch ups. A good product has good coverage. This means less labor cost. (Labor is the most expensive part of painting)
Third, quality products are more durable. This means instead of having to paint again in 3 years, you may not need to repaint for up to 10 years. (This is how you actually save money!)
This is why if you really do want to save money, get somebody who can do a good job the first time with a good product.
Yes! We are particularly interested in keeping you, your family, and your pets safe from dangerous fumes. Most of the products we use are considered low VOC (volatile organic compound). If you would like to look at the safest options, just let us know.
The highest cost in painting and most construction is labor. Jobs that require more preparation or going to greater heights (haha, like on a ladder or lift!) will cost more.
That being said, an interior paint job in Montana will likely cost between $3 and $5 per square foot of floor space. If your home is 2,000 square feet, this means you should expect to pay between $6,000 and $10,000.
An exterior paint job is harder to estimate without us coming to see and measure the project. A single story house may reasonably cost between $5,000 and $10,000. A two story may cost between $8,000 and $16,000. There is a lot of variation because some houses are easy to paint – simple architecture and straightforward job. Complexities like ladder work, caulking and repairs, nearby traffic, and sloped or unstable ground will factor in.

The #1 way people try to save is by getting bad paint. THIS IS A BAD IDEA! A lower quality paint may save you a few hundred dollars on an average paint job. It will also be less durable, meaning you may have to repaint in as little as 3 years ($$$). A quality product can protect your home for up to 10 years. A low quality paint will also not apply as well, meaning painters may have to spend more time applying another coat or doing touch ups. You may have to buy a higher volume of paint. There is a good chance you will pay the money you saved on extra paint or on extra paint labor.
The most expensive part of almost any construction project is the labor. If you are the type to save a dime, the best way to do that is to reduce our time on your project. This may include moving furniture, removing paintings, and stopping your dad from coming in to ‘shoot the breeze’.
Another tactic is getting work done in the winter. As this is the ‘slow season’ for painters, you will likely get lower bids. This can work for interior work only, as cold weather prevents exterior painting.
Finally, getting multiple jobs done at once or referring friends is a good way to get discounts.
Top Rock Painting offers a 2 year workmanship guarantee. This means that if you notice that we missed a spot, we will come back and fix it for free.
We truly want you to be happy with your home. We will do the utmost to please our customers. However, repainting a project will require additional costs.
To avoid confronting such a nightmare, take some time to select colors that make you happy. My wife, Elizabeth, would be happy to meet and discuss options with you. Sherwin Williams offers free brochures and test paints at small cost and also has some nifty apps to help you browse color options.
Hunter, Top Rock’s founder, is a handyman extraordinaire! He has worked in most areas of construction, including mold remediation, remodels, new construction, welding, small framing projects, flooring, tiling, and more.
Depending on availability, we may be able to help you with a variety of projects.
A typical quote will start with us scheduling a time to come see and measure the project. Usually within a week we can get a quote back to you. As a small business, we often take time after our kids bedtime or similar small chunks of time to get quotes out to you.
If you are feeling the drive to get a super-fast, right-now, kind of a quote, call Top Rock and describe your project. Express that you would like a ‘rough’ bid texted to you and provide us with measurements and pictures. We can normally get a rough quote out in a day and it may be subject to change when we see the project.
One of the most satisfying things in the world is to complete a job in good time with a quality finish and a happy customer.
A single room or similar size job will likely take 1-2 days. An exterior paint job typically takes about 3-5. Intricate or especially large jobs may take longer.
Not necessarily. With your permission, we can do the work while you are away. This is all based on your preference. We are just as happy to have you present for your project.
Exterior painting is best done when temperatures are above 50 F during the day. This means that in the summer, everybody in Montana will be booking paint jobs.
Interior painting, trim work, and similar indoor projects can be done year round.
